The family of serine/threonine protein kinase Akt (also called protein kinase B or PKB) plays a key role in variety of biological processes including cell survival, cell growth, gene expression, and oncogenesis (1-3). Upon cell stimulation, the kinase is translocated to the plasma membrane, where it is phosphorylated on two amino acids, Thr308 in the catalytic domain and Ser 473 in the COOH-terminal regulatory domain (4-6). The activation/phosphorylation of AKT/PKB is essential in its cellular signal transduction.
